Neb. proposal would give voters salary control

(AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker says he wants to put voters in control when it comes to deciding the salaries of the governor, attorney general and other top elected state officials.

Nebraska voters and taxpayers already have control of state senators' salaries. Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha says putting voters in control of other constitutional officers' pay is a "natural step forward."

His proposal is part of a constitutional amendment introduced Friday. It also proposes to restore top elected officials' salaries to levels before raises were given in 2007.

In a letter delivered to lawmakers on Tuesday, Gov. Dave Heineman and other top elected officials said they don't want a pay raise the next four years. They cited economic challenges as the reason.
