New businesses were created in Nassau County in August at a pace more than double the statewide rate when compared to the number of businesses created a year ago.

But in Suffolk County the rate, by contrast, was less than half the statewide trend.

Nassau added 1,104 new businesses this August, compared to 947 last year. That’s a 16.5 percent rise.

Suffolk created 895, up from 872 in August 2009. That’s a 2.6 percent rise.

The business creation statistics come from the Department of State, and compare the number of new business registrations it got in August 2010 with those it got in August 2009.

Statewide, the state division of corporations saw a seven percent rise in the number of newly registered business entities in August 2010 over August 2009.
