Newsday wins 2 national business news awards

Newsday has won two national awards for business journalism.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers awarded Newsday two of its "Best in Business" prizes for excellence in business journalism in 2012.

Lisa Du, Maura McDermott, Keiko Morris and Joe Ryan won in the Small Business category for a package of stories about the damage superstorm Sandy caused small businesses on Long Island, and their initial efforts to recover from the storm.

Joe Ryan won an award in the Real Estate category for a story about frustrated Long Island homeowners who couldn't access their insurance proceeds for Sandy damage because their banks wouldn't co-sign the checks.

"I'm grateful that SABEW has recognized the hard work and skill of Newsday's business desk," said Robert McGough, assistant managing editor for business at Newsday.
