After receiving funds for a diabetic alert dog from anonymous donors two years ago, Emma Brussell of Farmingdale, who is now 10, decided to use the extra funds to pay it forward, thus creating a nonprofit called 'Emma's Journey' which raises money to help pay for diabetic alert dogs for other families. The nonprofit just awarded its first grant to a 10-year-old girl in Louisiana. Credit: Matthew Hinton; Newsday / Thomas A. Ferrara
