Northwell buys $2.5M robotic system for Southside Hospital

Southside Hospital in Bay Shore on Monday said it has purchased a $2.5 million robotic system that can help surgeons make minimally invasive incisions in cardiac, thoracic and other surgeries.
The da Vinci Xi Surgical System has already been installed at the Northwell facility, a spokeswoman said.
Northwell has nine Xi systems at its hospitals, including at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
The Xi robotic system uses laser targeting, a layer of technological assistance that helps the surgeon pinpoint the incision site.
The system provides three-dimensional, high-definition views of the patient. Northwell said the device’s arm has a greater range of motion than a human, allowing for better access to the surgical site.
New Hyde Park-based Northwell is the state’s largest health system. It has 62,000 employees and operates 22 hospitals and more than 550 outpatient facilities in the state.
