New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health has laid off an unspecified number of workers within the organization, officials with the hospital network said Monday.
Northwell, which has more than 100,000 employees, according to its career webpage, and is the state's largest private employer, said the system decided to eliminate positions after a regular evaluation of its operations. Officials did not respond to questions on the number of jobs or the types of job titles.
The health system has a dozen hospitals on Long Island, including its South Oaks psychiatric hospital in Amityville, according to its website.
"Like many hospitals and health systems across the country, we regularly assess our operations to stay strong and responsive to the evolving needs of our patients and communities," Barbara Osborn, vice president of public relations for Northwell Health, said in a statement.
"As part of this broader effort, we made the difficult decision to eliminate a limited number of positions in the organization," Osborn said. The health system is supporting impacted workers, "and where possible, matching them to other open positions within Northwell that we must fill," she said.
Northwell, founded in 1997 through the merger of North Shore Health System and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, grew to a system with 28 hospitals after finalizing its 2025 merger with Nuvance Health. The merger, which added seven hospitals to Northwell's network, has grown to an organization with a nearly $23 billion operating budget, according to Northwell.
New York State's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification online dashboard currently does not list any notices regarding layoffs at Northwell facilities on Long Island.
The state's WARN Act requires companies with at least 50 full-time employees to file notice of a mass layoff or business closure 90 days in advance. Notices typically include the number of impacted workers and their place of employment.
