Northwell Health has tapped an executive to lead its Nassau County and Queens market and promoted two others as presidents of area hospitals, the health care system announced Wednesday.

Jon Sendach, a deputy market president who has served Northwell for more than 20 years, has been named president of the health network's central market of 2.8 million patients, Northwell announced. He will oversee four Nassau County hospitals — Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, LIJ Valley Stream Hospital and North Shore University Hospital — as well as LIJ Forest Hills Hospital and Zucker Hillside Hospital — both in Queens — plus more than 250 ambulatory care facilities.

Kidney specialist Dr. Michael Gitman has been tapped as president of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, while executive Lenny Nartowicz will lead Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, according to the statement by Northwell.

The trio of promotions came two weeks after Dr. John D’Angelo rose from his role as central market president to that of Northwell Health’s CEO on Oct. 1.

"Jon Sendach, Dr. Michael Gitman and Lenny Nartowicz are trusted hands who each bring decades of experience to new and expanded roles," D’Angelo said in a statement. "We’ll look to them to help navigate a challenging health care environment while both elevating quality and expanding access for New Yorkers."

Sendach began his Northwell career as a staff EMT at the Center for EMS in Syosset and has served as president of North Shore University Hospital since January 2020. That facility "is the ultimate proving ground and I feel as though I’m well equipped for my new role after managing day-to-day operations at such a busy and important institution," Sendach said in a statement.

Gitman has been chosen to succeed Sendach as both president of NSUH and deputy president of the central market, according to the release. He most recently served as president of Long Island Jewish Medical Center since 2021.

"I’m honored to return to North Shore University Hospital and grateful for the opportunity to serve a community that means so much to me," Gitman said in a statement.

Nartowicz, who most recently served as deputy president of Northwell’s Eastern Market and deputy executive director of South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, has filled Gitman’s vacancy at LIJ, Northwell said.

"It’s an incredible honor to lead Long Island Jewish Medical Center and continue its tradition of excellence in patient care, innovation and community service," Nartowicz said in a statement.

Northwell, the largest not-for-profit health system in the Northeast, serves residents of New York and Connecticut with 28 hospitals, more than 1,000 outpatient facilities, 22,000 nurses and over 20,000 physicians.
