Prices in the metropolitan area rose modestly last month compared with a year ago because of higher rents for apartments and homes.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday reported its consumer price index for the 31-county region that includes Long Island climbed 1.2 percent in November compared with 2012.

The increase was one of the smallest, year over year, in 2013. Such gains were last seen in the summer of 2012.

The cost of housing was up 2.8 percent last month compared with a year earlier, the biggest such jump since May 2009, according to Martin Kohli, the bureau's chief regional economist.

Prices for gasoline and groceries, year over year, fell 10.2 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, in November. The cost of natural gas also was down 10.1 percent.

Health care prices increased 2.6 percent last month compared with a year ago, while the cost of clothing rose 1.6 percent.
