New York State has issued nearly 2,000 temporary licenses for insurance adjusters to deal with the flood of claims in the wake of hurricane Sandy.

The extra adjusters help insurance companies meet a deadline of 15 days to respond to an insurance claim, a state Dept. of Financial Services official said.

As of Thursday morning the department had issued 1,949 such temporary licenses that allow insurance companies to bring adjusters from out of state to bolster local staff inspecting damage and reviewing claims.

Insurance companies can apply for the temporary licenses online or by fax. After hurricane Irene, the state provided 9,229 temporary adjuster licenses, the official said.
