The Twittersphere now has @NYStaxnews, the handle for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, which announced its foray into the popular social media network today.

The department said its tweets will help taxpayers and tax professionals stay informed on a range of state-related tax issues. The tweets “will announce initiatives and services such as filing reminders, the location of clinics that help low-income taxpayers complete returns, or the details of critical and timely changes to the tax law, and more,” the department said.

“Expanding our social media reach allows us to quickly provide real-time, accurate information directly to taxpayers and tax professionals who use social media,” said Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox.
