Olympus to close Hauppauge facility, lay off 41

Olympus America Inc. will be closing the doors on its last remaining Long Island facility this spring, according to a regulatory notice filed with the state last week.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice, 41 employees will be affected by the Hauppauge facility's closure, scheduled for April 30. Layoffs begin in March. The building at 400 Rabro Dr. E. has been the site of a returns center for Olympus America since 2001.
A company spokesman said Monday that operations at the facility will be gradually moved to other Olympus offices or outsourced in the next few months. The company has met with affected employees to discuss severance and retirement options, he said.
The building was placed on the market in November by the property's owner, Brentwood-based Elm Global Logistics, for $12.4 million.
Olympus America, a subsidiary of Japanese medical equipment and camera maker Olympus Corp., moved its headquarters from Melville to Center Valley, Pennsylvania, in 2006. The U.S. company functions primarily as a sales and marketing entity for the Toyko-based parent company with minimal manufacturing.
