A groundwater purification system to remove the carcinogen 1,4-doxane from a Michigan aquifer has won a national award for Pall Corp., of Port Washington.

Pall won the National Ground Water Association award for its efforts filtering the chemical from underground water contaminated by one of Pall's own subsidiaries, Gelman Sciences Inc., or GSI. The contamination took place before Pall bought GSI in 1997.

GSI, of Ann Arbor, Mich., used 1,4-doxane in the process of making medical filters, and it released the chemical into the ground, contaminating an aquifer.

The groundwater association award cited Pall's science, engineering and innovation in the project. It "designed, built and operates one of the world's largest oxidation treatment systems for the destruction of 1,4-dioxane in groundwater," pumping and filtering more than 2 million gallons of water a day at GSI, Pall said.

The award will be presented at the association’s Ground Water Expo and annual meeting in Las Vegas on Dec. 8.

The nonprofit National Ground Water Assocation has a membership of more than 13,000 U.S. and international groundwater professionals.
