Pharmaceutical careers are focus of Nassau Community College workshop

Teachers from Long Island  high schools and colleges in the United States, Brazil and South Africa are studying biosciences the week of Aug. 19 at Nassau Community College as part of an effort to prepare young people for careers in the burgeoning pharmaceuticals industry.

Twenty-five people are attending the Advanced Technological Education workshop, said program co-director Birgit Woelker, a biology professor at NCC in Garden City. They will learn about genetics and laboratory skills.

Instructors come from NCC and drugmakers ImClone and BASF.

The program has received funding from the National Science Foundation via Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. NCC is among 12 colleges across the country to win the support.
