Plan for change at MSC Industrial

The board of directors at Melville-based MSC Industrial Direct Inc. this week publicly disclosed its plans to replace its chief executive in a planned two- to three-year transition.
The result will be that Erik Gershwind, 39, executive vice president and chief operating officer, will become the chief executive within two to three years. Gershwind, above left, this week was appointed to the company board.
In the meantime the chief executive, David Sandler, 53, will remain in his job for two to three more years. After Sandler. right, resigns as chief executive he will become vice chairman of the company board.
The board, in a news release, explained, "the company has entered into a long term succession agreement to retain and incentivize Mr. Sandler." The board added, "There are no changes to management roles or responsibilities and no other executive leadership changes at this time."
MSC Industrial Supply's Big Book catalog for 2010-2011 lists 500,000 items, including supplies for emergency preparedness, maintenance and repair — especially for schools and colleges — and metalworking tools.
Founded in 1941 by Sid Jacobson, MSC put out its first Big Book in 1964. It has more than 90 branches and four major customer centers nationwide.
