Plans for empty Coram theater

A weekly newspaper reports that a defunct movie theater in Coram might be slated for development into a “main street” retail site.

The North Shore Sun report says "an unnamed 'national developer' is planning to purchase the former United Artists Movie Theater in Coram and is interested in building a mixed-use downtown center, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko, left, announced Monday."

That news has sparked an online discussion about homeless dwellers there, at Middle Country Road and Route 112.

A couple of current and former Coram residents have posted on the subject on the Topix website.

"i wonder whats going to happen to the huge homeless population on that site," one comment said. The post described “many guys and girls chillen in front of a huge homemade dwelling...  a big firepit that was blazing and they were all drinking."

In the Topix discussion of the homeless, one comment singled out a distinctively dressed homeless man. "ever see that man that takes his bike all over in the camo outfit? i wonder what his deal really is? it's a shame," the comment said.

The response: "i think about him and all the homeless i see when its cold out."
