This week, Northrop Grumman Corp. said it will move 850 jobs off Long Island, leaving just 550 workers out of a workforce that exceeded 25,000 in the 1980s.
The aerospace company was once a linchpin of the Island's defense industry, which employed as many as 80,000 during its heyday.
As high-paying engineering and technical jobs have left the Island, economists and local officials are concerned they are being replaced by lower-paying positions, many of them service industry jobs.
What's the best industry to replace defense on Long Island? What kinds of jobs do you think the Island should try to attract or generate?
