Postal service braced for busiest day
The U.S. Postal Service Monday braced its system for an influx of mail, planning for a 40 percent increase in the average number of mail it handles daily.
U.S. Postal Service was expecting more than 800 million pieces of mail to enter the system on Monday, making it the busiest day of the year. It was also the postal service's recommended deadline for sending holiday cards and letters to arrive in time for Christmas.
Tuesday is the recommended deadline for sending packages using Priority Mail shipping. And Wednesday is the last day to ship packages by Express Mail in time for Christmas.
The Postal Service is also suggesting ways customers can avoid a trip to the post office that include printing and paying for shipping labels online as well as scheduling a pickup online.
