Attorney John D. Osinga Helps Wisconsin Parents Secure Information from Schools

MILWAUKEE (PRWEB) April 19, 2018
John D. Osinga, founder of Osinga Law Offices, S.C., in an effort to help parents obtain information and documents from their children’s schools, is offering a free guide to the Open Records Law. The guide, which contains practical strategies, is entitled “Tips for Public School Open Record Requests.”
“The Wisconsin Open Records Law is intended to make it relatively easy for anyone to acquire public records,” said Osinga. “However, public school officials often choose to create obstacles that make it more difficult than necessary.”
The numerous tips in Osinga’s guide come from his experiences with public records litigation involving a Milwaukee area school district. The litigation enlightened him about the frustration parents experience when they are kept in the dark about their schools.
“I found that parents pose legitimate questions, such as ‘Why is the enforcement of student bullying policies lax or inconsistent?’ ‘Why aren’t public schools more willing to share information?’ ‘Why do school districts spend so much money on things unrelated to student learning?’ ‘Why is my child’s teacher leaving the district?’ ‘Why do students, parents and teachers become targets of retaliation when they point out school dysfunction?’” noted Osinga.
Osinga Law Offices has a Public Schools page containing examples of public records that school districts would prefer not become public. These records often illustrate how district employees exhibit an indifferent attitude toward the concerns of parents and teachers.
“Such an attitude can have significant consequences,” concluded Osinga. “Parents pull their children out of dysfunctional schools. Teachers either quit the teaching profession or transfer to a school district that is supportive and professional.”
