Sewage damage is one of the leading causes of infectious bacteria, viruses, and parasites spreading throughout the US. SI Restoration, servicing communities suffering from sewage damage since 1989, has recently published the Top Ten Health Risks Associated with Sewage Damage to help educate property owners on the dangers of raw sewage exposure.

In a recent publication by owner of SI Restoration Jeffrey Cohn, the sewage damage specialist with almost three decades of experience outlines the “Top Ten Health Risks Associated with Sewage Damage that Property Owners Should Know About.”

It is without question that sewage damage is not something a property owner should ignore. Along with the hazards of spreading infectious disease, the sheer impact of sewer water damage alone is enough to cripple the structural integrity of any property. Coupled with the potential need for professional mold remediation services, property owners could face serious losses if sewage damage goes unaddressed.

Though property damage and loss can set a home or business owner back quite a bit, no danger is more serious than the health risks involved with sewage exposure. SI Restoration’s recent publication outlines the top ten most dangerous, separated into three separate categories: Bacteria, Parasites, and Viruses.

One of the most common symptoms associated with all ten of these infections is gastroenteritis – or infectious diarrhea. While infectious diarrhea may not be pleasant to focus on, it is important for property owners to know of the dangers associated with the illness. While gastroenteritis can pass with rehydration, rest, and vitamin intake, the illness can prove to be detrimental if it is ignored or mistreated.

Other common causes of sewage damage illnesses are e. coli, salmonella, giardia, tapeworm, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and the rotavirus. While some of these pathogens are generally associated with eating tainted foods and sexually transmitted diseases, perfectly healthy individuals can encounter their deadly symptoms once they are exposed to raw sewage.

Touched on briefly in the publication are the risks of mold growth. One of the most frequently asked questions about sewage damage in regards to mold colonization is, “How does mold make a person sick?” Mold exposure has been linked to respiratory complications such as congestion, asthmatic-like symptoms, and shortness of breath. Other reactions include skin irritation, eye irritation, and high fevers. Just like with other illnesses related to sewage damage, those with immune deficiencies can experience deadlier complications.

To avoid the “Top Ten Health Risks Associated with Sewage Damage," property owners should act quickly to ensure the safety of anyone in danger of being exposed to the raw sewage. Time is of the essence to prevent catastrophic damages to both the property and to the health of its inhabitants.
