FreeWire Technologies, Inc., a start-up out of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, has partnered with Simform Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a full-service software development agency, to build a platform that supports the daily operation of its electric vehicle (EV) Charging as a Service.

Traditional fixed charging stations are expensive and time-consuming to install, require drivers to park in specified spots, and end up being underutilized when people park at a station all day even if they only need to charge for a couple of hours. This creates headaches for facilities managers and "charge rage" among drivers. FreeWire's mobile EV chargers, called Mobis, mitigates these issues because they can be deployed with zero infrastructure upgrades, allow drivers to park anywhere they want in the lot, and can move to the next car immediately after one finishes.

FreeWire's software platform is vital to supporting daily operations, as the ability to park anywhere means that drivers must specify where they park each day. A driver gets to work, logs into FreeWire's mobile (iOS and Android) or web app, and checks in by aligning a pin with their location in a geo-fenced area. The attendant can view all check-ins, manage charging sessions, and communicate with drivers.

FreeWire's continued relationship with Simform demonstrates the company's commitment to delivering a first-class user experience, as end users (EV drivers) never interact with the hardware. "Our software is the face of our business when it comes to drivers, so it's critical that it both look and perform to the high standards we expect. Simform has engaged itself in an entirely new market and has been able to build a full-fledged suite of apps for a use case that had never previously existed. "It was fun and exciting to work with such an innovative start-up," says Hardik Shah, General Manager of Simform.

It has been projected that there will be an additional 1.5 million EVs on the road by 2020, all of which need to be charged. Not only can FreeWire save on total cost of ownership, but the user experience is vastly improved over fixed charging stations that are already struggling to keep up with demand. FreeWire's Charging as a Service is currently deployed on LinkedIn's Mountain View campus, serving up to 20 vehicles per day.
