Governor Cuomo Introduces Bill to Provide Source of Income Discrimination Protection
Civil rights organization ERASE Racism applauds Governor Cuomo for introducing a bill that will make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against potential renters who use governmental assistance or legal non-wage income to pay rent.
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PRWEB) April 27, 2018
Fifty years ago this month, the Fair Housing Act banned discrimination in housing and on April 26th, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo showed his support for fair housing by introducing a bill that outlaws housing discrimination based on a person’s usage of governmental assistance or lawful non-wage income to pay for housing.
This is a cause for celebration for members of the Statewide Source of Income Coalition, steadfast advocates for source of income protection. This legislation protects our most marginalized community members including veterans, people living with disabilities, low-income families, and single parents.
ERASE Racism has been at the forefront of challenging housing discrimination for over two decades and commends Governor Cuomo for his leadership to combat housing discrimination.
ERASE Racism led efforts to strengthen fair housing protections in Nassau and Suffolk counties and originally organized The Statewide Source of Income Coalition in 2016 as a network of advocates supporting amendments to the New York State Human Rights Law that would expand protected classes to include "Lawful Source of Income". The Source of Income Coalition is currently led by Enterprise Community Partners as we continue the fight to ensure fair housing for all New Yorkers.
“With the introduction of a bill by Governor Cuomo to ban discrimination based on lawful source of income, all New Yorkers will now be given the opportunity to live in places that they can afford without the bias and stigma that has been limiting their housing options,” said ERASE Racism President Elaine Gross.
