Emeryville, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2015

Head Over Heels Athletic Arts is granting boys competitive team member, Nicolas Deras, a $1,000 scholarship to attend UC Davis this fall. Based on Deras? exemplar work ethic, HOH is excited to assist with Deras? college expenses.

?I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the HOH community for the past three years,? Deras said. ?Until I joined HOH, I never understood the power of passion and perseverance. I understand now what it means to push past my own expectations, and I have the confidence to accomplish any goal I set for myself.?

While balancing academics with the demands of competitive gymnastics is a challenge, Deras found a way to excel in both fields. The high school graduate achieved a 4.37 GPA and plans to major in biomedical engineering at UC Davis.

With his biomedical engineering degree, Deras aspires to create technology to help amputees live actively. Deras? experience as a gymnast inspired him to help others achieve their goals, despite physical detriments.

?I hope to use my degree to help others,? Deras said. ?In particular, I hope to help amputees with new technology so that their lives may be just as normal and active as a non-amputee. I hope to make it possible for amputees to live without limitations, as I have lived so far.?

Since arriving at HOH, Deras has made tremendous strides and is a proven leader in the gym. Under the direction of the boys team program director, Michael Ash, Deras improved his level 6 abilities to level 10 caliber.

?My participation in gymnastics has shaped who I am, and I wouldn?t be the same person otherwise,? Deras said. ?My goal is to give those same things to someone who is missing a limb, so that they can have the opportunity to participate in sport. Hopefully, technology will level all playing fields and I hope to be a part of that.?
