Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan on Blackberry Management Changes; Kristian Tear COO and Frank Boulben CMO are Out

Today Blackberry announced Kristian Tear COO and Frank Boulben CMO will leave the company, as per their press release on Nov. 25. They also said James Yersh will become new CFO replacing Brian Bidulka.

Tech analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.

“Tear and Boulben were simply not successful at turning the Blackberry ship around,” says Principal analyst Jeff Kagan.

“John Chen, Executive Chair and current CEO is now in the driver's seat at Blackberry. Can he save Blackberry?” Asks Kagan. “There is a big question mark over Blackberry right now. We really don't know what direction the company will head and what other major changes will be coming.”

“All we do know is current CEO John Chen seems to have a passion for change and improvement. Can he make a difference? All we can do is hope the answer is yes. At this point Blackberry has been beaten so far down that improvement is the only direction they can go,” says Kagan.

Blackberry has been trying to remake itself, several times over several years without success.

“I believe Blackberry can be saved, but the path they have taken in recent years has been all wrong. Will they learn the right path is the question? They may have to settle for a smaller market share, but they could still be a successful and growing company. All we can do right now is hope John Chen understands where the opportunity is hiding,” says Kagan. “Let’s hope he can make the difference for Blackberry.”
