NC Advocates for Justice Board Passes Resolution Aimed at Ending Mass Incarceration

The association of lawyers who represent the accused and the injured, which for decades has advocated for reform in the criminal justice system, rededicated itself this month to fight to end Mass Incarceration in North Carolina and the country.

The NC Advocates for Justice’s Board of Governors met on October 18, 2015 in Asheville, NC and unanimously passed a resolution* committing NCAJ to dismantling mass incarceration in North Carolina, to making the issue a priority, and to identifying and engaging in reform efforts.

The resolution cites that while the United States has only 5% of the world’s population, it has more than 20% of the world’s incarcerated population – moreover Mass Incarceration has devastating effects on individuals, families, and society.**

NCAJ President Chris Nichols said of the resolution, “As President of NCAJ, I support these efforts and in accord with the resolution, will require NCAJ to continue to expand upon this good work. I am creating a taskforce to plan and coordinate our ongoing efforts to end mass incarceration and educate our legal community and our state on this problem. This taskforce will also coordinate with outside justice groups and form a blue print of action going forward.”
