Patrons of OKC Animal Shelter Receive $120,000 Grant for Community Cat Program

The WaterShed Animal Fund has awarded Patrons of the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter a $120,000 grant to aid their Community Cat Program benefiting Oklahoma City Animal Welfare.

The WaterShed Animal Fund has awarded Patrons of the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter a $120,000 grant to aid their Community Cat Program benefiting Oklahoma City Animal Welfare.

Recently, Oklahoma City Animal Welfare implemented several new programs in effort to decrease intake, increase lives saved, and decrease euthanasia. They have set the goal of saving all healthy, adoptable animals that enter the shelter. It is believed it will take a 90% live release rate or better to accomplish this. This grant will help support the Community Cat Program, which is a major piece to achieving this goal.

Patrons of the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization created to support the mission and operation of Oklahoma City Animal Welfare. Oklahoma City Animal Welfare has partnered with the Central Oklahoma Humane Society to develop the Community Cat program that works to reduce the cat population in the Oklahoma City area. The concept behind the Community Cat Program was to develop a more efficient means of limiting cat reproduction over time and ultimately lowering the number of cats that are put down every year. Rather than adopting traditional methods of trapping and euthanizing, the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare has instead developed a method that will reduce the cat population by transferring stray cats to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society where they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped and later released back into the community. Through the aid of the grant received by the WaterShed Animal Fund, a division of the Arnall Family Foundation, it is estimated that 4,000 cats will be saved.

Patrons purpose is to promote and protect the health, safety, and welfare of pets and people and to support the mission of the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare.
