Stacey Honowitz, TV Legal Analyst, Supervisor Sex Crimes Unit, Author and Lecturer, Educates Parents and Children about Sexual/Child Abuse
Legal expert inspires public support during Child Abuse Prevention Month
MIAMI (PRWEB) April 02, 2018
Stacey Honowitz is on a mission to make the discussion of sex crimes and reporting become mainstream and no longer "taboo", as a 30-year veteran of the State Attorney's Office she is the "go to" person to share expertise in this area.
Amidst the prosecution and sentencing of former USA Gymnastics national team doctor Larry Nassar, who had sexually abused more than 200 girls, including elite Olympic gymnasts, Honowitz prosecuted Raymond Adams, a gymnastics coach that sexually abused girls in various states. The case was featured in a six part investigative series for the Indy Star and was picked up by USATODAY. The series sparked the reporting of Nassar and the horrific cases that followed abuse.
Honowitz tackles this delicate subject with her books, My Privates Are Private and Genius with a Penis, Don't Touch!, which help parents and kids “break the ice” surrounding child/sexual abuse.
“Now, Sex Crimes are on the world stage for all to see and people are learning now, what I have known for years. It’s time to face it head on. Education is knowledge and knowledge is power,” said Honowitz in many interviews.
Honowitz regularly appears on television and lectures across the country about how to discuss sexual abuse with kids. She has also participated in many documentaries and investigative pieces dealing with sexual assault and what goes into the prosecution of these cases.
With National Child Abuse Prevention month approaching, Honowitz’s books and lectures help real victims to recognize the importance of reporting early even though they may be experiencing mental anguish, fear of retaliation, fear of a family breakup, shame and embarrassment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one in six boys and one in four girls are sexually abused before the age of 18. The CDC’s research also suggests that many more cases go unreported.
“I hope that more public figures and celebrities get behind this initiative because any child no matter what their background is can be a victim. Honowitz believes that "if a celebrity or athlete talks about abuse, kids will listen, as it would be a message from someone they admire and can relate to."
