The City of Sunny Isles Beach Learning Annex will again offer classes from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Florida International University. The first class, a one session Lunch and Learn entitled: “Politics is news – all the time” with Dr. Kurt Stone, was very well received and the professor will be returning for another session and a series next year.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute encourages those in their golden years to “learn something new for the sheer joy of learning.” Their course offerings result in “active, seasoned adults finding personal enrichment while expanding their horizons.” In a recent article about the SIB Learning Annex, SIB Commissioner Dana Goldman wrote, “…the overwhelming response we received to the first Lunch and Learn has confirmed that we are headed in the right direction to plan for our adult population that is eager to learn more.”
Coming up in November, OLLI is offering six weeks of “The Greatest Show on Screen” Café Cinematheque with Shelly Isaacs, a creative director/writer and producer for film, cable and broadcast TV who holds a Masters from New York University where he was an adjunct professor. View and discuss the significance of five of, what critics and film historians say are, the finest films ever made. The class will be held in the Sunny Isles Beach Commission Chambers on Tuesdays from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm beginning November 10. The price with a SIB Resident ID Card is $60, OLLI Members are $100 and all others $130. Putting it in perspective, for the cost of a trip to a Broadway show, the course offers 6 weeks of intellectual stimulation and discussion led by a respected instructor. Registration is ongoing, do not delay. Stop in to reserve your spot at Pelican Community Park (18115 North Bay Road) or SIB Government Center (18070 Collins Avenue).
Dr. Kurt Stone is a rabbi, author, lecturer and political historian, who has been involved in the American political process for 40 years. He has held positions such as a speechwriter, press secretary and campaign manager. The next Lunch and Learn, a continuation of the discourse “Politics is News” with Dr. Stone, is planned for Monday, January 11 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Pelican Community Park. This morning event is offered free to SIB Residents and OLLI Members. At the end of that month, beginning Tuesday, January 27 from 10:00 am – 11:30 pm, Dr. Stone will begin a four-week series of political discussions. This course will take place in the SIB Commission Chambers and is offered to SIB Residents for $40, OLLI Members for $70 and all others for $100. Registration for the two courses will begin for residents on November 9 and non-residents on November 23 at Pelican Community Park (18115 North Bay Road) or SIB Government Center (18070 Collins Avenue).
