The award-winning landmark property Augustus Warner House was placed on the market last month, announced Izabela Sloma, senior vice president of sales at Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty in Lincoln Park. Rebuilt by Noah Properties in 2015,the luxury home at 1337 N. Dearborn Street has five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
“The home is in a highly desired location on a tree-lined street in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood,” said Izabela Sloma. “It’s four blocks from Lake Shore Drive and three blocks from vibrant Lincoln Park. This area of Chicago has long been the home of the country’s entrepreneurs, politicians and social elite, and it frequently ranks among the top 10 richest urban neighborhoods in the United States.” The home backs up to the Florsheim Mansion and the original Playboy Mansion, and it’s half a block from the Racquet Club of Chicago.
The historic brick magnificent house is five stories tall and is surrounded by a refined wrought iron gated entry. The home has an open floor plan and high ceilings throughout. In addition to its five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, the house features an elevator, nine fireplaces, a sauna, two laundry rooms, two mudrooms, a wine room and three wine coolers. While many homes in the neighborhood do not have attached garages, the Augustus Warner home has an attached two-car garage that is also heated. The home also contains a cinema room with a 120-foot screen and state-of-the-art entertainment system and a recreation room with a heated floor. An audio system provides high quality sound throughout.
“This home is unique for its ample outdoor living spaces,” Izabela Sloma commented. “One of the home’s four outdoor spaces is a roof deck for sunbathing, and the other outdoor terraces are ideal for entertaining. Of course, the spaces are perfect for cocktail parties and gatherings on warm Chicago summer nights, but even cooler spring and fall evenings are made accommodating with the terraces’ fireplaces and custom lighting. The terraces are also outfitted with two outdoor grills, countertops and cabinetry so caterers have plenty of space to prepare and serve food. When you include the home’s generous outdoor terraces and two-car garage, the home is 7,200 square feet of exquisite living space. ”
The master suite has a double-french door exit onto one of the home’s outdoor terraces, and its high tray ceiling contributes to the room’s large, airy feeling. The suite includes a spa-style bathroom with heated floors, an extra-large shower with two rain showerheads and a steam bath. The suite’s two walk-in closets feature high-end built-in storage cabinets and lighting. Each of the home’s other four bedrooms has a walk-in closet too.
“The kitchen is a dream kitchen,” Izabela Sloma said. “Expansive marble counters provide plenty of elegant, functional space for food prep, and a large, slightly elevated island with stools provides space to sit and chat, work or enjoy the view. Wolf appliance add to the kitchen’s visual and functional appeal, offering several high-end ovens and a large cooktop. A larger eating nook off to the side of the kitchen provides extra space for casual dining.”
The home was built in 1884 for publisher and merchant August Warner and his family. It was designed by L. Gustav Hallberg, Sr., an renowned early Chicago architect known for the elegant upper class single family homes he built in the 1880s. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks considers the Augustus Warner House an important “first-generation” building in the neighborhood and reports that it contributes to the Gold Coast neighborhood’s historic significance.
In 2012, luxury home builder Noah Properties began a three-year renovation of the property, preserving its unique Queen Anne and Gothic Revival exterior. While retaining its outer character, Noah Properties nearly completely re-built the interior. Ninety-seven percent of the home’s interior is new, appointed with high-end finishes and carefully curated materials.
“Because the property is landmarked by the City of Chicago, Noah Properties worked closely with local officials to retain the property’s architectural charm and elegance,” Izabela Sloma said. “Inside, the property is a modern oasis of luxury and elegance.”
The renovation of August Warner House gained a great deal of attention since its completion in 2015. The home earned a Preservation Excellence Award from Chicago’s Landmarks Commission for its faithful conservation. Noah Properties later received a Good Neighbor Award from the Chicago Association of Realtors for bringing the property back to life in a way that preserved the home’s historic flare while providing ample modern living space that enhances the neighborhood.
More information about the property's historic significance can be found at the City of Chicago's Landmarks Commission. More information about the home's offerings can be obtained from Izabel Sloma at Jameson Sotheby's International Realty in Lincoln Park.
