Tunstall Americas, a leader in independent living technologies and 24/7 call center service, has partnered with the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, as well as sculptor Chris Kane and the senior art majors at the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts to debut ‘Conversations in Metal’, an intergenerational art project, at the Dawn at the Grant Gallery on Tuesday, May 17th.

Tunstall commissioned the cross-generational art project from sculptor Chris Kane, and his students at the Jacqueline M. Walsh School, to further its involvement in senior healthcare and to expand Tunstall’s outreach in the local Pawtucket community. The art project is a partnership between the Pawtucket School Department, the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, Director of Senior Services Mary Lou Moran, and the Kane Sculpture Studio. High school art students and senior citizens from the Senior Center worked with professional sculptor Chris Kane to create complex forms in wax which were later cast in aluminum.

The students and seniors began the project with a story exchange exercise that helped break the ice and led to deep conversations around such topics as ‘Work’ and ‘Family’. Phrases from these conversations were cut into the wax bars that make up the sculptures. Legibility of the text is diminished by the many process steps involved in casting the complex knotted forms of the sculptures, leaving intriguing fragments of the conversations that began the process, hidden amongst the drip welds and tool marks that define the surface.

The “Conversations in Metal” exhibit will be open from 6:00pm-9:00pm beginning on May 17th. Individual art work from the JMW Arts students will be displayed in addition to the aluminum statues. The Dawn at the Grant Gallery is located at 250 Main St in Pawtucket. For more details about the Dawn Gallery or the exhibit please visit http://www.facebook.com/dawnatthegrantII.
