The Port Washington Police Department's plan to buy land owned by Publishers Clearing House has run into substantial public opposition, according to a news report.

The department has signed a contract to buy the 4.7 acre site for $2.5 million, and wants to build a new headquarters there, in Port Washington North.

The Port Washington News titled its Friday report "Large Public Outcry on New Police Headquarters."

Residents and public officials alike in the villages of Port Washington and Port Washington North attended a Dec. 2 forum and spoke out against the police department's plan to buy the land, the report says. Instead, there's a public consensus that the land should be acquired and converted to public use, for recreation and open space, the report said.
