Report: LI farms grow $260M worth of produce

Agriculture is a part of Long Island's economic future as well as its past, the state comptroller said Tuesday.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a report showing local farms produced nearly $260 million worth of vegetables, fruit, sod, flowers and other products in 2007, the latest available data. Suffolk County accounted for most of the production and has the highest number among all counties statewide.
Suffolk grew the most pumpkins, cauliflower and tomatoes in the state.
"I want Long Islanders to be more aware of agriculture," said DiNapoli, who lives in Great Neck Plaza. "It's important for us not to overlook agriculture as a part of our future."
DiNapoli made his remarks during an event at White Post Farms in Melville. His report comes a day before Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's “summit" in Albany for producers of wine, beer and liquor.
