The Riverhead Town board is considering whether to take over the duties of the town’s Industrial Development Agency.

Members of the town members have already discussed the idea after learning that there aren’t enough volunteers to fill the IDA board and at times its meetings are adjourned for lack of a quorum, according to a videotape of the board discussion posted on the Web site RiverheadLocal.com.

The board, which meets again Tuesday, is expected to deal with the question later in the month.

In the videotape, town Supervisor Sean Walter proposed the idea and said he’s asked his staff to research how “to bring the IDA back as a town board function.”

Walter proposed retaining the IDA’s executive director, Anna Maria Sforza Villa, but making her a town employee. Her salary is funded by the IDA’s projects, he said.

The IDA was “established in 1980 by an act of the State of New York, and requested by the Riverhead Town Board,” the agency says on its Web site.

The IDA is a public benefit corporation intended to “advance the job opportunities, health, general prosperity and the economic welfare of our townspeople.”
