Sealift Inc., a 41-year-old Oyster Bay shipping company, has been awarded an $11.9 million option under a previously awarded contract to transport and preposition cargo for the U.S. Army, according to the Department of Defense.

The U.S.-flagged vessel chartered under the contract may carry cargo that includes explosives, ammunition and vehicles. The contract is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2017.

The contract was signed with the Navy’s Military Sealift Command in Norfolk, Virginia.

Sealift operates a fleet of oceangoing ships and all operations are handled through its Oyster Bay office, according to the company website.
