Sealift Inc., a privately held shipping company in Oyster Bay, has won a $9.5 million contract extension from the U.S. Air Force for the charter of a cargo ship for an additional year, the Defense Department announced Monday.

The U.S.-flagged ship Capt. David I. Lyon, named for an Air Force logistics officer killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, by an improvised explosive device in 2013, will support the Air Force's pre-positioning program for the Pacific fleet.

Sealift operates a fleet of oceangoing ships and all operations are handled through its Oyster Bay office, according to the company website.
