LI Sears, Kmart closings will result in 165 layoffs, regulatory filing says
Sears Holdings Corp. will lay off a combined 165 employees at its Sears store in New Hyde Park and Kmart location in Riverhead, both of which are scheduled to close in November, according to state regulatory filings.
The Kmart, which will lay off 65 workers, is located at 605 Old Country Rd. in the East End Commons shopping center. The Sears store, which will lay off 100, is at 1400 Union Tpke. in the Lake Success Shopping Center.
The stores are two of 46 unprofitable stores that Sears Holdings last week said it would close as part of its latest round of cuts.
Liquidation sales will begin Aug. 30, the company said.
The stores will join the hundreds nationwide that Sears has closed in recent years as it has struggled to compete with Amazon and other online retailers.
On May 5, there were 529 Sears stores and 365 Kmarts in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, a company spokesman said. In January 2016, there were 705 Sears locations and 941 Kmarts.
In January, Sears said it would close 103 stores, with most shutting their doors by April, including a Sears at 195 N. Broadway in Hicksville.
In May, Sears announced it would close 48 Sears locations and 15 Kmarts in early September, including a Kmart at 1000 Montauk Hwy. in West Babylon.
