SF nonprofit news venture hires CEO, editor

(AP) — A new nonprofit media group created to cover San Francisco Bay area news is a step closer to launch.

The Bay Area News Project said Thursday it hired a CEO and editor-in-chief. The project also announced an agreement with The New York Times to supply news for the Times' Bay Area section.

New CEO Lisa Frazier is a partner at the consulting firm McKinsey and Co., where she specializes in media. Editor-in-chief Jonathan Weber co-founded The Industry Standard and spent eight years at the Los Angeles Times.

Financier Warren Hellman spearheaded the project, which involves KQED public radio and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

The endeavor will use paid reporters, editors and students to produce stories for the Web, radio, television and print.
