Who's taking part in START-UP NY?
Sixty percent of companies accepted last year into Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's economic development program of tax-free zones are either start-ups or businesses from other states and countries, a new report says in April 2015. Ninety-three businesses have been selected for START-UP NY in its first year. The program lets them pay no state and local taxes for up to 10 years in return for creating jobs, and their employees would not pay state income taxes for up to 10 years.
Together, the companies have pledged to create more than 2,800 jobs in the next five years and spend at least $173 million on equipment purchases (some projects have no investment totals yet). Buffalo/Western New York has the most companies followed by Long Island.
