State audit: Jobless benefits went to 14 dead people
ALBANY - A state audit has found $1 million worth of errors in New York unemployment insurance benefits, including checks paid out to 14 dead people.
The comptroller's office audit says $1 million in checks either didn't comply with federal or state rules or were just processed in error.
The audit covered checks paid out between April and December of last year.
The findings include one man who certified nine times that he was jobless and collected $4,000 in benefits despite being employed.
The Department of Labor is using the findings in the audit as part of its anti-fraud measures.
The labor department says its own efforts saved the state $35 million last year. - AP
