A modest upturn in afternoon trading was enough to deliver record high closes for the Dow Jones industrial average.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index of large companies ended just below its own record high Tuesday.
ON WALL STREET: At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 35.5 points, about 0.2 percent, at 19,251.8. The S&P 500 gained 7.5 points, about 0.3 percent, to 2,212.2. The Nasdaq composite added 24.1 points, about 0.5 percent, to 5,333.
OIL PRICES: Oil prices continued to give up gains from a rally fueled by the oil cartel OPEC’s deal to trim production. As markets closed Tuesday, benchmark U.S. crude was down $1.08 at $51.75 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London on the Intercontinental Exchange Europe, Brent crude, used to price international oils, shed $1.14 to $53.80 a barrel.
MAKING MOVES: Phone companies rose more than the rest of the market. AT&T jumped 1.9 percent. Banks also rose.
