Stony Brook Medicine this month will begin moving researchers and some other employees into its new 240,000-square-foot cancer center located on Stony Brook University’s East Campus, adjacent and connected to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Stony Brook held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the milestone on Thursday.

The $194 million construction project is part of a larger  $450 million expansion that also includes a children's hospital.

The cancer center, named the Medical and Research Translation building, will open to patients in January.

"This will be transformative from the patient's point of view," said Dr. Yusuf A. Hannun, director of the Stony Brook Cancer Center. "The flow will be such that a patient will work directly with the relevant team based on their disease."

Stony Brook said there will be 12 multidisciplinary disease-management teams at the site, including teams for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma and neurologic oncology.

The center includes 38 infusion chairs for adult patients, 11 private pediatric oncology exam rooms, a fireplace centrally located in an open bay infusion area, an on-site mixing pharmacy, and nutrition and social work consultation rooms.

There are also four research floors at the center, as well as a 305-seat auditorium and 10 classrooms that can accommodate up to 300 students.

Health systems throughout Long Island are building out their cancer care services.

For instance, Manhattan-based Memorial Sloan Kettering plans to open a 114,000-square-foot facility at the Hub in Uniondale, and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip said it plans to open a cancer center at its hospital. Both of those facilities are expected to open next year.

New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health opened the $46.5 million Imbert Cancer Center in Bay Shore in late 2016.
