Storage facility plans move forward at former Long Island Health & Racquet-Coram

Plans for a storage facility at the Coram site of a longtime health club inched forward last week with the approval of a zoning change.

The Brookhaven Town Board approved a zoning change application by Royal Health and Racquet Club Inc. and SAFStor Real Estate Co. LLC, when it met last week, town spokesman Drew Scott confirmed to Newsday.

A public notice posted on the grounds of Long Island Health & Racquet at 607 Middle Country Rd. announced the Sept. 17 public hearing to address the application for the "proposed construction of a two-story mini-warehouse facility."

The details of the business arrangement between Royal Health & Racquet Club Inc. and SAFStor Real Estate Co. LLC were unclear on Tuesday. Newsday could not immediately reach either entity for comment.

"On their application form, the owner is listed as Royal Health & Racquet Club Inc. The contract vendee is listed as SAFStor Real Estate Co. LLC," Scott said. "That is all we know about who the owners are and what their business arrangement is."

The health club closed on Aug. 31 after 34 years in business, an online announcement said. The posting does not give a reason for the closing.

A notice on the club's door and website read, "Your loyalty, support, and patronage have meant so much to us, and we sincerely thank you for being a part of our club's history."

The Coram club offered amenities like racquetball, a weight room, cardio area, group fitness classes, functional training turf with a sled, tire and battle ropes, according to its website. Long Island Health & Racquet facilities in Setauket and Wantagh remain open.
