Suffolk Community gets $1.9M to train unemployed and veterans

Unemployed workers, low income workers and returning soldiers will have further training opportunities for careers in renewable energy technology and energy efficiency thanks to a $1.9 million grant just awarded to Suffolk County Community College. Suffolk is one of 41 community colleges and organizations getting $125 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Labor.
 
The money is for the POWER program – that’s Pathways to Opportunities Within Energy and Renewables – and “we are now beginning to finalize the plans necessary to implement our proposal components,” according to Mary Lou Araneo, above left, the school’s vice president for institutional advancement.

The training can lead to certification for the following roles:
--energy rater,
--solar/photovoltaic installer,
--or LEED green associate
