The Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency gave its executive director, Anthony Manetta, a $20,500 raise Thursday, bringing his salary to $155,000 per year.

Manetta said he didn’t ask for the wage increase but welcomed it, saying he had earned more at two consulting businesses, one of which he started. The IDA offers tax incentives and other aid to companies and not-for-profit groups in return for new jobs and investment in buildings and equipment.

Manetta joined the IDA on June 13, 2012, replacing longtime executive director Bruce E. Ferguson. With the backing of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, he was selected over several candidates with more experience in economic development.

Manetta said Thursday that Paul J. Tonna, chairman of the IDA board of directors since February, had suggested the salary hike. It was approved unanimously.

Citing the number of deals in the past year, new initiatives and the IDA’s response to superstorm Sandy, Tonna told the board that Manetta deserved the extra money: “I think we are getting a pretty good deal.”
