Suffolk County ranked second in average wage gains in New York State in the second quarter of 2010, according to federal data released Thursday that provides another snapshot of how local economies fared during the last recession.

Wages in the county rose 4.4 percent in the second quarter of last year, compared with the year-ago period, putting the county behind only New York County, or Manhattan, where wages rose 9 percent in the same period. The data is based on a Bureau of Labor Statistics analysis of the state’s 17 largest counties. Nassau came in sixth with a 2.5 percent increase. The national average was 3 percent.

Suffolk County’s average weekly wage was $966 vs. $1,659 in Manhattan. Nassau came in at $1,010. The national average was $865.

In employment growth, Suffolk ranked sixth in the state, with a 0.5 percent increase, while Nassau came in 12th, with a decline of 0.2 percent. Kings County, or Brooklyn, took the top spot, with a 3.6 percent increase.

The last recession, considered the severest downturn since the Great Depression, officially spanned from December 2007 to June 2009.
