Henry Oh joined a line of customers outside the Riverhead Best Buy on Wednesday at about 6 p.m. Shortly after midnight, the Mattituck resident left the store with a new Nintendo Switch 2 system.

"I've actually never done a midnight launch before," said Oh, 39.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially released Thursday at midnight.

By Thursday afternoon, most Long Island stores had sold out, with a few exceptions.

As of 2 p.m., Newsday confirmed that Target in Valley Stream, GameStop at Roosevelt Field and Costco in Riverhead had units in stock. No stores would say how many.

Best Buy locations in Riverhead and Westbury declined to confirm availability and referred customers to its website.

The system is not yet available at Game On, a used game store with locations in Miller Place and Smithtown.

Walmart said that more inventory will be coming soon and that there’s currently a limit of one per customer online and two in stores.

"I actually tried to go and get a couple units today," said Smithtown Game On employee Brandon Buro, who noted that he planned to buy some at area GameStops but was unable to find any in stock.

Buro added that it will probably be a few months before Game On has any Switch 2 units for sale, and that many customers have been requesting them.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is a gaming system that can be played either on a TV screen or as a handheld device, with improved processing power over its predecessor.

Its controllers, which are attached to the system, can be detached when playing on the TV. Users can connect with friends online and play together via a new GameChat" feature.

The original Nintendo Switch has sold 152 million units since its 2017 release, making it Nintendo's second highest-selling system behind the handheld Nintendo DS, which sold 154 million units, according to Nintendo's corporate website. The Nintendo Switch 2 retails for $450, or $499 with a download code for the new Mario Kart World game. Games can be purchased at stores or online through Nintendo's eShop.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was formally unveiled in a special livestream presentation on April 2, when its functionality and games were detailed. Domestic preorders were delayed for several weeks due to President Trump's Liberation Day tariffs, as Nintendo assessed their potential impact, and when preorders did open up on April 25, customers found chaos due to retailer delays and errors, according to the Associated Press. Newsday reported long lines at GameStop and excited customers who waited for several hours to secure a preorder.

Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026, The Associated Press reported. The company reportedly hopes the Nintendo Switch 2 boosts its sluggish sales. In May, Nintendo reported a 43% decline in profit for the fiscal year through March but promised a turnaround.
