The retailer Target has submitted an application in a bid to develop the 18-acre property in Huntington Station where a Lowe's home improvement store was to be built, according to A.J. Carter, a spokesman for the Town of Huntington.

The application, which was submitted by Target's engineering firm, needs to be reviewed and approved by the town planning board, Carter said.

Lowe's originally paid $35 million in 2007 for the property, which is located on Jericho Turnpike, but pulled out of the project late last year, citing financial troubles.

There are currently 12 Target stores on Long Island.
