Riverhead Town looks at drug tests for cabbies

Taxi drivers may soon be subject to regulation in Riverhead Town, with the possibility of fingerprint checks and random drug testing of anyone driving a cab within the township -- including cabbies who take passengers to or from the LIRR station.
The Riverhead News-Review reports that Supervisor Sean Walter, speaking at a public town board work session last week, said, “There’s an investigation being done right now to see if some of the taxi cabs are being used for things they shouldn’t be used for.”
He gave no specifics about the investigation.
Town officials said taxi regulations could be applied to owners and drivers, and to the vehicle itself.
