WHAT Yahoo Weather combines easy-to-read typography and crisp pictographs with local background photos sourced from Flickr for a clean and accessible look.
HOW MUCH Free; download at tinyurl.com/c8vcvsl
COMPATIBLE WITH iPhone (3GS or newer), iPod touch (third generation or newer) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. The app is optimized for iPhone 5
WHAT'S GOOD You'll not only find expected things, such as the current temperature, five-day forecast and predictions of the day's weather, hour-by-hour, but there's also an interactive map that provides radar, satellite, heat and wind readings. The precipitation graphic shows the percentage likelihood of wet or worse weather, while the wind and barometric pressure graphic has an animated spinning wind turbine, which, frankly, is just fun to look at. There also is a sun and moon graphic that provides the times of sunrise and sunset and illustrates the phase of the moon and position of the sun in the sky.
Adding locations is as simple as typing in names; viewing them is as easy as swiping the screen from left to right. The "current" location setting changes automatically while you are on the move.
Flickr users can join the Project Weather group and submit background photos to be used by Yahoo Weather. Photos are tagged with your Flickr screen name and link to your photo within Flickr (see flickr.com/groups/projectweather for submission details).
WHAT'S NOT There is only one optional setting, which allows you to change the temperature reading from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
BOTTOM LINE Yahoo Weather has the perfect balance of good looks and useful data.
