A former federal prosecutor who once headed the U.S. attorney's office on Long Island is leaving the legal office at software giant CA Technologies, while another former head of the federal office is joining the Islandia company's legal team.

Gary Brown, who joined the firm in 2005, when it was still Computer Associates, was sworn in as a federal magistrate in a private ceremony at the U.S. District Court in Central Islip last week, officials said.

Joining CA as a head litigator is Richard Donoghue, who is leaving his post as head of the criminal division for the Eastern District U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn.

Brown, a graduate of Columbia and Yale Law School, headed the U.S. attorney's Long Island office in Central Islip from 2003 to 2005.

Before his Justice Department stint, Brown was a clerk for the late U.S. District Court Judge Jacob Mishler on Long Island.

Computer Associates hired Brown, with his prosecutorial experience, while it worked to recover from a multibillion-dollar accounting scandal.

Donoghue, a graduate of Hofstra and St. John's Law School, headed the Long Island office from 2006 to 2007, before becoming head of the criminal division.

Before joining the Justice Department, Donoghue had been a paratrooper with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

Commenting on Donoghue's departure, Eastern District U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said: "Rich Donoghue is the complete package -- an excellent lawyer, outstanding manager, and the person you'd want beside you in court on your most difficult case."

Jennifer Hallahan, a CA spokeswoman, said: "Following an extensive search, we are pleased that Rich Donoghue is joining the CA Technologies legal team as chief counsel, litigation. The experience he brings will prove invaluable."
