Google Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. are recalling Chromebook 11 laptop chargers because of fire and burn hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement, a setback for the Web-connected computers.

Google had nine reports of chargers overheating and melting, with one incident leading to a small burn to a consumer and another leading to minor property damage, the agency said in a statement today. The recall affects approximately 145,000 units that were sold for about $280 in October and November, the commission said.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled charger for the HP Chromebook 11 and contact Google for a free replacement charger,” the agency said.

Chromebooks, which run software developed by Google that focuses on Internet-based services, are aimed at helping the company gain a foothold in the personal-computer market. The devices, which are now made by several hardware manufacturers, had 3.3 percent of back-to-school PC sales in the U.S. between June 30 and Sept. 7, up from zero a year earlier, according to the NPD Group.
